Allan Houser, born Allan C. Haozous, was one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. This week’s blog marks the very special events that are taking place to commemorate what would have been his 100th birthday and his work as a sculptor, painter and teacher.

Beginning June 21st , from 5pm -7pm, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts will kick off the yearlong celebration with EDUCATE + INFORM + INSPIRE: A CELEBRATION OF ALLAN HOUSER’S 100TH BIRTHDAY. Enjoy recently installed outdoor Allan Houser sculptures in the MoCNA Allan Houser’s Art Park, hear remarks about his life, enjoy music by Native Roots and a light reception.
On June 28th, the Houser-Hazous family will hold a very special Ground Blessing Ceremony and Mountain Spirit Dance performed by Joe Thonnie, Jr. and the Apache Crown Dancers. This event will take place on the grounds of the Allan Houser Sculpture Garden located about forty minutes South of Santa Fe. The gates, to the property, will open at 4:30pm and the ceremony is due to begin around dusk. On June 30th, please join the Institute of American Indian Arts, the Houser-Haozous Family, Fran Mullin and Mark Kiffin in commemorating Allan Houser’s 100th birthday and establishing the Allan Houser Scholarship at IAIA. This event will be held at The Compound Restaurant on Canyon Road. The reception begins at 6pm with dinner being served at 7pm. Tickets are $250.00 per person with all net proceeds going to establish the scholarship. For reservations and more information, please contact Jane Steele at the Compound 505-982-4353. IAIA is the only four-year degree fine arts institution in the nation devoted to contemporary Native American and Alaska Native arts and is where Mr. Houser taught for thirteen years.
