“There is not a man among us who does not at times need a helping hand to be stretched out to him, and then shame upon him who will not stretch out the helping hand to his brother.” ― Theodore Roosevelt
We thought that this quote might be worthy of the good that the The Food Depot and our local restaurants have been doing for the past 20 years. You might think that we have forgotten that the big game is happening this Sunday (but we haven’t) and although people gather together and share food during the Super Bowl, it just isn’t quite the same experience. This Saturday, February 1, from Noon to 2:30pm this annual event takes place at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and all proceeds benefit nine counties in Northern New Mexico. Now that’s some good work!
You be the judge. Yes, we’ve got it right. When you purchase a ticket you get to taste 28 local restaurants serving up their best soup competing in four categories: vegetarian, savory, cream and seafood, including Del Charro’s Butternut Squash soup. Starting with a vegan base of pureed butternut squash, coconut milk, and citrus flavors we add our homemade wild rice croutons (gluten-free and containing eggs), then cap it off with a Crème Fraiche seasoned with Red Chile Powder-either of the last two ingredients can be withheld to accommodate the discriminating vegetarian’s taste. Taste them all and cast your ballot for the best soup in Santa Fe! We know…. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. Why not you, right?
Soup isn’t the only thing happening at the Souper Bowl. Be sure to take some time and view the silent auction items. Because we all like to bring something home that is special from the area we are visiting, we encourage you to check out the art, jewelry, local gift certificates and much more. You can also purchase event T-shirts, serving trays and our favorite – cookbooks.
When you visit Santa Fe and the Inn of the Governors you truly can make a difference.
