When one thinks of Native American art and Santa Fe there are numerous museums, galleries and events that spring to mind. This year, I am thrilled to share with you the new Indigenous Fine Art Market, also known as IFAM. During Indian Market week, this new event brings some very exciting and fresh events to Santa Fe from August 20th through the 23rd at the Santa Fe Railyard – just a few blocks from the Inn of the Governors.
IFAM’s genesis came from a grassroots collaboration of three talented, visionary individuals and a collection of artists. Earlier this year, the discussion turned to representing native communities, their families and taking ownership of how their culture is represented through fine art. The outcome was the creation of this new market which will showcase the diversity of tribes not just in North America, but eventually from all over the world. The Indigenous Fine Art Market will eventually become the Indigenous Fine Art Movement.
There is an expectation of over 300 artists (from over 120 different tribes) participating in the three day, juried event. Not only will you see established well-known artists but also new and upcoming artists. As an example, legendary artist Kevin Red Star has partnered with emerging artist, George Alexander, to be the designers of the IFAM merchandise. There are exciting designs for you to take home as a souvenir. Wouldn’t you like to have your piece of history? I am particularly drawn to this design by the young Alexander (shown in photo). You might want to join them both for a live paint event on Thursday, August 21 at 11 a.m. There will be music by DJ Brian Frejo and it will all be streamed live on webcam. Raffle tickets are just $20 and available on line and Kevin’s painting will be raffled off on August 23, Saturday. $20….. and maybe a Kevin Red Star painting to take home?!? Wow!
The IFAM art show and celebration begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 21 and continues daily through Saturday, August 23. Each artist has been encouraged to bring a variety of their work to showcase their particular celebration of their own Native American culture. The IFAM stage will have cultural performances representing tribal diversity. Click here for the schedule of events. I have included a link here that shows a map of the IFAM festival, too. There’s space for food trucks, a fashion area and even a storytelling section.
Since IFAM overlaps on Saturday with the traditional SWAIA Indian Market on the plaza, I truly feel you can attend both markets and share in a broader celebration of Native American culture when you visit Santa Fe.
