Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi
The Cathedral Basilica is one of Santa Fe’s most celebrated landmarks. It’s unique French Romanesque Revival architecture draws visitors into the doors. Inside, the delicate paintings, stained glass paintings, statues and grand columns heighten the sacredness of the church. Docent tours of the Cathedral Basilica are available daily. The Cathedral Basilica can be spotted from any Downtown Santa Fe location, and is an easy walk from the Inn of the Governors.
New Mexico’s first Bishop, Father John Baptiste Lamy in 1850, initiated building of the Cathedral Basilica. The Cathedral was built atop the existing adobe church; the small adobe chapel dedicated to La Conquistadora on the north side still remains. Bishop Lamy and seven other priests are buried within the Cathedral walls. The Cathedral was elevated to a Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. Basilica means a church of particular importance in Rome and abroad. Churches are honored by the Holy Father because of their importance in the history of spreading Catholicism.
